USA – Reno – 10,000 forced to evacuate as fire crews hold back wildfire in Reno
USA – Seattle - Heavy snowfall and possible hurricane-force winds are expected across the Seattle region through Thursday this week as twin winter storms move over the Pacific Northwest. Between five and ten inches of snow could arrive in the Seattle-Tacoma area on Wednesday. Strong winds are expected to hit coastal areas and may cause power outages and travel disruption due to felled trees. More Info

ASIA
India – continued possibility of terrorist attacks throughout India the Alert for India has been extended through to the end of Jan 2012. Travellers are urged to pay particular attention to their personal security. The Department informs citizens that in preparation for Republic Day celebrations from Jan 26 – 29, there will be heightened security and increased police presence in all major Indian cities.
India – Thiruvananthapuram is facing a threat from dengue fever and chikungunya.
Mumbai Airport from Friday 20 Jan – 4 months: The main runway at Mumbai will be closed, the airport will operate during peak hours (before 0900 & after 1700) Delays of 30-40 minutes on average are anticipated in the day – the alternative runway could not cope with all the air traffic. The new taxiway & updated runway should re-open on 01 June
Philippines - Manila’s main airport is to revise flight schedules until September 2012 due to a partial closure for runway repairs which are expected to take 8 months to complete. The runway will be closed between 1230am – 0530am on daily basis, until the work is completed.
Thailand – The US Embassy has issued an emergency message warning of possible terror attacks in tourist areas of the capital “in the near future”. Security measures have been increased as a precaution. Travellers are advised to remain vigilant & to keep abreast of local security advice & media reports.
AUSTRALASIA & PACIFIC
Perth Airport – Flights out of are said to be returning to normal after severe storms battered the area. The electrical storm had caused up to 40 minute delays for out-going Qantas flights however they are now pushing out flights during lulls in the thunderstorm activity. So far no incoming flights have had to be diverted however they were landing intermittently with minor delays which are set to continue until schedules return to normal.
AFRICA & MIDDLE EAST
South Africa: Tourists rescued after torrential rains and flooding in Kruger National Park
Senegal – Demonstrations occur regularly in Dakar and some have turned violent. They are usually announced a day or two in advance but can also start at very short notice. A number of demonstrations are planned for 22-23 January
Egypt – 25 January – Military preparing for possible protests, celebrations & potential clashes. The day was recently declared a national holiday to mark the one-year anniversary of the Egyptian uprising. Downtown roads in Cairo & around Tahrir Square in particular remain blocked in some parts by stacks of concrete blocks & barbed wire fences as well as lines of security personnel which were put in place to separate protesters from nearby government buildings. There is a great deal of speculation concerning the potential for violence but little confirmed information.
Ghana – Malaria is continuing to hit Awutu-Senya district in Ghana. 100,000 mosquito nets have been distributed in the district to tackle the outbreak.
Kenya – The UK FCO has updated their travel advice for Kenya and are urging British nationals to exercise extra vigilance following an alert of further threats from terrorist attacks in Nairobi. The FCO believe that terrorists may be in the final stages of planning attacks. Attacks could be indiscriminate and could target Kenyan institutions as well as places where expatriates & foreign nationals gather, such as hotels, shopping centres & beaches. The FCO are strongly advising British Nationals to exercise extra vigilance & caution in public places & at public events.
UK & EUROPE
Norway – 20 Jan- Islamists to demonstrate against the war in Afghanistan in Oslo 20 January. A group of radical Muslims has called for a demonstration in front of the Norwegian parliament after Islamic midday prayers 20 January in condemnation of Norway’s involvement in the “occupation of Afghanistan” and the “massacre” of innocent people. The risk of unrest should not be ruled out. We recommend keeping away from the rally.
Scotland: 23 & 27 January. The UK’s National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT), have announced two 24-hour strikes within the West of Scotland Signalling Centre in Glasgow. The strikes are planned for Monday 23rd January and Friday 27th January. Any passengers due to travel during these dates are advised to expect travel disruptions, including cancellations and delays of train services, particularly in Glasgow.
Cyprus – 25 January – Air traffic controllers are set to walk out at Larnaca Airport and Paphos Airport between 1pm & 5pm local time. As a result of this there may be the possibility of disruption to flights.
Rome & Milan – Congestion Charges: The British Foreign and Commonwealth Office has released the following information for travellers:
Milan: As From 16th Jan, people driving in Milan city centre (Zone C) will have to pay a congestion charge of €5 per day (Monday – Friday only). The ticket will be valid from 7.30am to 7.30pm & covers all accesses made on the same day.
Rome: In an attempt to reduce levels of pollution, the City authorities occasionally introduce traffic restrictions. This involves only allowing the circulation of traffic on alternative days, linked to the vehicles’ odd or even number plates. On these occasions only vehicles with the appropriate number plate are permitted to drive within the “fascia verde”. Normally the restrictions are from 09.00 – 13.00 and from 16.00 – 21.00 hours. Please check the Comune di Roma website for exact dates.’ Car rental companies should have full details when booking a car.
Italy
Monday 23 January – Taxi Drivers in Italy will hold a national strike on 23 Jan. A total work stoppage is illegal, while this will probably not stop the strike, it may force the drivers to limit their action.
Thursday 26 January – Italian 24 hour train strike, Trenitalia strike, to start at 9 PM.
Friday 27 January – A general strike is planned to take place in Italy which will include strike action among cabin crew at national carrier Alitalia from 1330 to 1730. The industrial action organised is also likely to cause travel disruption to road, rail & air transport.
Monday 13 February Strike by Air France/KLM at Milan’s Malpensa airport 4 hours only,10am to 2pm.
Switzerland: Security to be raised for World Economic Forum on 25-29 January in Davos
Spain – Bilbao metro employees set to strike 26 January.
Trade unions representing Bilbao metro employees, who have been protesting against a wage freeze for several weeks, have called for a series of selective strikes between 0945 & 1245 local time 26 January. The risk of disruption because of the action should not be ruled out.
Belgium 30 Jan – Possible Nationwide General Strike – full information yet to be confirmed but it is looking likely that this will take place causing major travel disruption across Belgium. (Traveller locations sent to affected desks and notice sent to OPS 20 Jan)
Belgium general strike is planned for Monday, 30 January. Same day as European summit.
As the European Summit is taking place the unions will take full advantage of the fact so travellers need to be prepared for: extra traffic on roads, travellers need to leave for airport early, taxi’s will be hard to find – get alternative arrangements in place to be on the safe side. Monitor the flights. Make sure airlines have passengers mobile number where possible in the bookings.
Most probably the strike will effect all international trains. Trains may stop the evening before.
It may be best to book a hotel now – we can always cancel before the deadline.

France 06 & 09 Feb - airports to go on strike in February. French aviation workers’ unions said they would strike to protest a government bill aiming to make it more difficult for them to take industrial action in the future.
Spain: Unions representing 20,000 employees belonging to Spain’s national carrier, Iberia, are proposing plans to strike on Mondays and Fridays from February 3rd. The unions want Iberia to extend employment guarantees until the end of 2015 after setting up the lower-cost unit Iberia Express this year however the airline claims this is not feasible. Unless negotiations due to take place next week are successful unions say the employees are prepared for further strike action.
